At Canadian Lead PS students engage in three hours of specialist classes over the week.
Specialist classes include; The Arts, Languages (Chinese), Health and Physical Education
Our Art Program provides opportunities for students to express themselves through a variety of media including painting, drawing, modelling, construction, and collage. Students learn to plan, reflect and refine their art work. Students often undertake art activities in conjunction with classroom themes. Our first Art Show post COVID was held in 2023 and we are excitedly planning our 2024 event. Our Art Show provides an opportunity for the wider school community to view student artwork and for students to enjoy sharing their work with family and friends. Selected classes also participate in an annual excursion and art activity at the Ballarat Art Gallery as part of Children’s Week.
Our school run a Mandarin program, which exposes students to both spoken and written language and culture. We have been incredibly lucky to have had three native Mandarin speakers as LOTE teachers, so our students are being taught by experts in the language. We also run an after school Chinese Academy for older students who particularly enjoy LOTE and who wish to spend another hour a week learning about the language and culture of China.
We do not currently have a music specialist on staff, however our students experience a music curriculum for an hour a week over one Semester, alternating with our Health program.
We provide our students with a comprehensive Physical Education and Sports Program. We aim to inspire students to develop long-term healthy attitudes and habits, improve personal health and fitness, build gross motor skills, learn team games and strategies and develop important personal and interpersonal skills. Importantly, students learn to value and celebrate their personal efforts and improvement rather than focus on winning.
Swimming
We transport students to the Ballarat Aquatic Centre for our swimming program. Foundation students enjoy a five session play-based water familiarization program in Term 3. Year 1/2 and Year 3/4 students attend an 8-lesson program in Term 2. Year 5/6 students have a longer program of 10 sessions. All programs work on a continuum including water safety, confidence, stroke development, stamina, and rescue techniques.
Athletics
A comprehensive and fun training program ensures students are fully prepared for athletics carnivals. The emphasis is on personal effort, teamwork and enjoyment. Our F/1/2 students take part in a low-key fun athletics afternoon at Sparrows Ground, where we walk to the location, enjoy throwing, running and jumping activities, then walk back to school. The emphasis is on participation, skill development and enjoyment. Years 3/4/5/6 students have a more formal athletics carnival at Llanberris Reserve later in the year.
Sports Houses
A Sports House system operates throughout the school. Younger siblings are allocated to the same House as older brothers and sisters. The four houses are Point, Richards, Eureka and Canadian. Students of each house elect House Captains.
